Who is Siven Ramen?
Siven Ramen was born in December 1945 in the town of Curepipe, the eldest of seven children in a modest family. From a young age, he had to help care for his younger siblings, and by 12, he left school to work and support his family as at this time, education was not free. His father could not afford to send him to secondary school. Luckily, he met a teacher who was able to give him some education for free and was able to learn basic skills. He took on various jobs, from mechanical workshops to small farms, until he found himself drawn to a local tailor’s shop. Fascinated by the tailor's skill, he watched him work with fabric, and one day, the tailor invited him to try sewing himself, saying, “It will be useful to you one day.” Those words struck a chord with Siven, sparking his passion. He began by sewing a simple pair of shorts at home, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Siven then began an apprenticeship at Caustat in Curepipe, where he honed his skills and became a talented tailor. In 1971, alongside a fellow apprentice named Hassim, he formed a partnership, and together they became well-known in Curepipe under the name Asven. Eventually after a few years of success, they decided to part ways and pursue their careers independently.
Thus, in 1986, Siven Ramen Haute Couture was born. Though he faced both success and struggle, Siven received the opportunity of a lifetime: a scholarship to study in Paris, the world’s fashion capital. At ESMOD Paris, he trained under leading designers and had the privilege of working alongside icons like André Courrèges and Sonia Rykiel, who became powerful sources of inspiration. Returning to Mauritius, he transformed the local Haute Couture scene. His “Smoking” suits became renowned, with people eagerly lining up for his creations. Wedding attire soon became his specialty, with every groom wanting to marry in an SR suit. His distinctive cuts and handmade suits set him apart, fueling a growing demand for custom, hand-tailored pieces.
Bigger opportunities soon followed. Siven participated in the ‘Festival de Kalou’ in Réunion Island and designed attire for the hostesses of the 1993 Francophonie Summit. For a decade, he crafted uniforms for the pilots and stewards of the Mauritian national airline, sending his work around the world. His reputation even reached royalty, allowing him the privilege of dressing Tord Magnussen, the brother-in-law of the King of Sweden.
Over the years, Siven Ramen has established himself as a name synonymous with excellence. His extensive experience has made him unparalleled in his field. Despite his vast expertise, he continues to learn and also acts in theatres.
